Sullivan South Rebels told not to fly flags at Science Hill game

Sullivan South High School administration has told students not to fly their Rebel flags on Science Hill's turf, according to a timesnews.net community journalism report by Taylor Maines.

According to Maines, administrators made the announcement Wednesday afternoon. Thursday morning students "known for their school spirit" were called to the office and again told to keep their Rebel flags at home.

It's not an isolated event says Principal Greg Harvey.

Out of respect for the home team, Harvey said Sullivan South administration complies with opponents' requests that South students not bring Rebel flags onto their turf. Daniel Boone High School, for example, has made such a request before. And, Harvey added, students have always been good about complying with such a request.

In this case, Harvey said they were advised by Science Hill administration that they do not want Rebel flags flown at their school because some students and staff find them offensive. The unwelcome flags will be confiscated, Harvey said, if students show up with them.

Students would not be asked to keep their flags at home if the game were being held on Sullivan South turf, as the Rebel is their school mascot, Harvey said.

There are alot of Native Americans that find the US Flag offensive but it flies everywhere! I see no difference in either flag except one is our flag now and the other used to be.

to some rebel flags are a symbol of hate and racism and those people need to shut up

to most the flag is a symbol of pride in where they are from and their cultural heritage

but I agree that they shouldnt take them on the road if the home school requests them not to

The country is getting so politically correct it seems that before long we wont have a country. That was the reason the country split up and the Stars and Bars came about to begin with. Sure... slavery is an evil. But a lot of the people who were fighting for the South weren't fighting for slavery alone.. they were fighting to defend their family farms and the honor of their native states. At least I'll say something for the "Rebels". At least they had some pride and honor in their country... rebel flag or not.
People need to get off high horse and quit yelling out slavery everytime they see a Rebel flag. People werent fighting for slavery... they were fighting for their way of life. People call the Rebel flag a sickening reminder of bad time in American history. So....really.. I guess England looks at our flag and feels the same disgust for the Stars and Stripes... since it was the original "Rebel" flag to begin with?
I'm not trying to get a big thing started on here.... I just think people see a Stars and Bars flag and think the South is getting ready to rise up again when all they really need to remember is that its just one flag of many that has become a part of our nations history and has helped make us who we are today.
If the students want to fly their flag that represents their school, I think thats cool. It and their mascot is a part of history.
If we go to London in the 2012 Olympics and all our fans jerk out those Stars and Stripes when we go to kicking everyones tail in the Olympic events.... I doubt they'll be people taking up the flag in the venues saying, "Don't bring your American flag to the events. It is a disgusting reminder of a time in our country's history." If you think about the times...we were just another part of England... we were just across a big pond. I love this country and am a proud American.... Rebel flag or not....but if not for a few "Rebels" back in the 1700's, we wouldn't be the strong and proud, politically correct hypocritical nation we are today. Three cheers for the English Rebels and their flag the Stars and Stripes... the original "Rebel flag".
